MCO Scholarship

Amount: $500

Student Eligibility:

Urban Solutions, Inc. (USI) Year 2014 Scholarship

Scholarships of $1000 and book awards of $500 will be given to graduating high school seniors with demonstrated academic ability and community service. There are several scholarships available. Only one application is required for consideration of all applicable scholarships.

Criteria: A high school senior graduating this current year:

  1. has been accepted to an institution of higher learning
  2. with a cumulative grade point average of a 3.0 or above (4.0 scale)
  3. Active community service
  4. Resident of Detroit, MI

Student selection will be based on:

  1. academic ability
  2. active community involvement
  3. financial need
  4. 2 recommendations from teachers, ministers, community leaders, or counselors
  5. essay: The essay should discuss your career goals, why you should receive this scholarship and how it will help you. Discuss your plans for making a difference in your community. Include other information that you feel is relevant, 300-400 words, double spaced, typed or computer generated on 8 1/2 x 11 white paper)
  6. Interview by the Urban Solutions, Inc., Scholarship committee

MEA Scholarship Fund

The amount and number of scholarships offered each year shall be determined by the trustees of the MEA Scholarship Fund. Such scholarships may be offered on a renewal basis limited to four times in a five-year period.

Deadline is February 28, 2014 (click here for application).

The scholarship will not be awarded for the purpose of working on a post-baccalaureate degree.

Eligibility

■ Graduate of a Michigan public high school
■ Will attend or is currently an undergraduate student of a Michigan public community/junior college, four-year degree-granting institution, or vocational training institution that grants a degree, certification or license. Those attending the following private institutions ONLY are also eligible: Baker College-Flint/Owosso; University of Detroit–Mercy; Davenport University-Eastern Region Campus; Adrian College; Finlandia University; Albion College; and Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University. (The aforementioned private institutions are existing local MEA affiliates.)
■ Previous recipient of MEA Scholarship Award.
■ Note: Children of MEA officers, fund trustees, and MEA staff are not eligible.
(A child of an MEA, MESSA or MEA-FS staff person is eligible if the other parent is an MEA member.)

Criteria Of Award

Priority is given on the basis of:

1. Academic achievement. 2. Extra-curricular activities. 3. School and community service.
4. All other criteria being equal, first consideration will be given to children of MEA members and students from lower income households.

In addition:

■ Scholarship determination will be made strictly on the merit of the applicant’s performance against the above criteria. The selection and award of scholarships is a nondiscriminatory process.
■ MEA Scholarships will be awarded by the trustees of the MEA Scholarship Fund. This body is composed of MEA members and persons appointed from the general public. The fund is financed through the voluntary contributions of the members, staff and friends of the Michigan Education Association.

Eligible students seeking the scholarship shall complete a written application form provided by the fund. Applications are available from local affiliates of the MEA, UniServ offices or high school counseling offices, by writing to:

I Can Make History Contest

In celebration of Black History Month, Kroger invites students to help celebrate Black History Month during the 7th annual “I Can Make History” Contest.  This year, students can win more than $71,000 in prizes.  They will also present a $3,000 Best in Show Scholarship and a $5,000 School Leadership Award.  The latter will recognize the school with the most winning entries in the combined categories.  All entries must address one of the following themes:
Tell us about any African American past or present and why you want to be like that person.
 
How are you making history in your community/neighborhood?
 
Michigan students in the 4th through 12th grades may enter original work in one of four categories: art, essay, music and poetry. Entry deadline is 5 p.m., Friday, February 28, 2014 and they will contact all winners by March 25, 2014. The awards luncheon is scheduled for Saturday, April 5, 2014.

MCDONALD’S BLACK HISTORY MAKERS OF TOMORROW

TO ENTER, STUDENTS MUST HAVE A
GPA OF 2.5 AND SUBMIT A 500-WORD TYPEWRITTEN ESSAY ABOUT “INSPIRATION MAKES ME…WHO OR WHAT INSPIRES YOU.” THE PROGRAM IS OPEN TO ALL STUDENTS REGARDLESS OF RACE. THE PROGRAM AWARDS $1,500 SCHOLARSHIPS TO TEN STUDENTS PURSUING SECONDARY EDUCATION.
Eligibility
This program is open to students with at least one parent of African American or Black Caribbean descent.
Successful high school seniors will demonstrate the following attributes:
Leadership: Tell us about your success as a leader in school, church or community organizations.
Scholarship: If you have maintained a minimum 2.5 on a 4.0 scale, you are eligible to apply.
Character: Tell us how you motivate your peers by maintaining a positive attitude and exhibiting qualities of good citizenship.
Community Service: Tell us how you spend your spare time to help those in need.
Requirements
• A completed Black History Makers of Tomorrow application, signed by the student and a parent/guardian.
• A 500-word typed essay. Follow the essay guidelines to prepare your essay celebrating your local community and your interaction with cultures outside of your own.
• Applicant must have at least one parent of African American or Black Caribbean descent.
• An official high school transcript.
• A letter of recommendation.
• All materials must be submitted together in an envelope postmarked no later than January 31, 2014

Buick Achievers Scholarship Program

Applicants must:

  • Be high school seniors or graduates or be current undergraduate students
  • Plan to enroll in full-time undergraduate study at an accredited four-year college or university based in the U.S. or Puerto Rico for the entire 2014–15 academic year (excluding proprietary and online schools)
  • Plan to major in a specified course of study that focuses on Engineering/Technology or select Design and Business-related programs of study. See the list of eligible majors.
  • Be interested in pursuing a career in the automotive or related industries
  • Be U.S. citizens and have permanent residence in the United States or Puerto Rico

Excluded from consideration are employees and relatives of employees of Scholarship Management Services, Scholarship America and their affiliates and subcontractors, and GM Foundation Directors, Officers, and staff and their relatives. Although GM employees are not eligible, relatives of General Motors employees are eligible.

Scholarship recipients are selected based on the following factors:

  • Academic achievement and financial need
  • Participation and leadership in community and school activities, work experience and interest in pursuing a career in the automotive or related industry
  • Please note special consideration will be given to the following applicants: first-generation college, female, minority, military veteran or a dependent of military personnel

The majority of the scholarships will be awarded to students majoring in Engineering/Technology fields.

Selection of recipients is made by Scholarship Management Services. All scholarship recipients may be subject to a criminal background check. Recipients of a Buick Achievers Scholarship shall not commit any act that indicates dishonesty or moral turpitude or that otherwise could materially injure the General Motors Foundation, Buick or General Motors Company’s reputation. If such an act is committed by a Buick Achievers Scholarship Program recipient, the Buick Achievers Scholarship award shall immediately be revoked. In no instance will any Director or Officer of the General Motors Foundation or any employee of General Motors play a part in the selection. All applicants agree to accept the decision as final.

Recipients of the 100 Buick Achievers National Scholarship will receive:

  • An award of up to $25,000 per year, renewable for up to four years, and one additional year for those entering a five-year engineering program.

The actual award amount will not exceed the total cost of the student’s tuition, fees, books, supplies, required equipment, room and board and other allowable expenses, less other gift aid known at the time of application (scholarships, grants and other awards that do not have to be paid back). Awards are renewable for the given years noted above or until a bachelor’s degree is earned, whichever occurs first. Renewal is contingent upon maintaining a cumulative 3.0 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale), full-time enrollment and continuing to major in an eligible field of study.

Awards are for undergraduate study only.

The Darin C. Banks Foundation Scholarship

The Darin C. Banks Foundation presents its Annual Collegiate Scholarship Competition. Because Darin was an academic scholarship recipient in his youth, as were a number of DCBF’s Board of Directors, we know the challenges paying for college can pose for students. Three $1,000.00 scholarships will be awarded.

Program Information and Guidelines

Scholarship America’s Dream Award has been established to assist students from across the nation entering their second year or higher of education beyond high school. Renewable scholarships are offered each year for full-time study at an accredited institution of the student’s choice. The awards will grow in amount each year, allowing students to receive aid throughout their college careers.

This scholarship program is administered by Scholarship America, the nation’s largest designer and manager of scholarship and tuition reimbursement programs for corporations, foundations, associations and individuals. Awards are granted without regard to color, creed, religion, sexual orientation, age, gender, disability or national origin.

Eligibility

Applicants to the Scholarship America Dream Award must:

  • Be U.S. citizens, U.S. permanent residents (holders of a Permanent Resident card), or individuals granted deferred action status under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (DACA).
  • Have received a high school diploma or the equivalent from a U.S. school by September 2013.
  • Have completed or expect to successfully complete a minimum of one full year of postsecondary education by June 2014.
  • Plan to enroll in full-time undergraduate study at the sophomore year level or higher at an accredited two- or four-year college, university or vocational-technical school in the United States for the entire 2014-15 academic year.
  • Have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (or its equivalent).
  • Demonstrate financial need.

Awards

The number of awards granted will depend on the amount of funds available each year. A portion of the funds has been designated for students majoring in a STEM field (science, technology, engineering or math) and a portion has been designated for students of Chinese-American background.

If selected as a recipient, the student will receive an award ranging from $5,000 to $15,000. Awards may be renewed for up to three additional years or until a bachelor’s degree is earned, whichever occurs first. Renewal is contingent upon satisfactory academic performance in a full-time course of study. Each year of eligible renewal, the award will increase by $1,000.

Previous recipients are not eligible to reapply.

Awards are for undergraduate study only.

Application Process

  • Start by clicking on the Login / Register tab in the top right corner of this screen, then click on Register an Account. You will need to read and agree to a consent statement, supply a unique and valid email address, and create a username and password.
    • Correspondence throughout the application process will be by email and US postal mail. Email messages will be sent to the username and email address registered when you created your account. Students failing to use a valid active email account that will accommodate bulk mail may not receive consideration.   • After submitting the registration form, you will receive an email with a link to verify your email address and activate your account. Click the link in the email to complete the activation process. You are now able to log into the application.
  • Complete the application by entering data in the format described. Proper punctuation and standard capitalization (Jill Smith, 10 Main Street,New York, NY) must be used.
  • During the application process, you may leave the site prior to submission by clicking on the Logout link located on top right of your screen. To return to the application, you must login using your username and password.
  • Once all application requirements are satisfied, the Submit Application button will be available to you near the bottom of the Review Applicationpage.
    • Carefully review your entire application before clicking the Submit Application button.
    • Applications are evaluated on the information supplied; therefore, answer all questions as completely as possible.
    • Applications must be submitted electronically by the application deadline in order for your application to be processed.
    • After the application is successfully submitted, no further additions or changes can be made.
    • The application can be viewed or printed for your files until the application deadline. We recommend that you print a hard copy of your application for your records. Do not send a printed copy to Scholarship America.
    • Scholarship America will email acknowledgment of receipt of all submitted applications.

Program Deadline

Your application must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. Central Standard Time, December 19, 2013.

Required Documents for Semifinalists only

Do not send these documents unless you are notified that you’ve been selected as a semifinalist in January.

Based on the information submitted on the electronic application, semifinalists will be selected by Scholarship America and notified by email in mid-January. Semifinalists will be asked to provide the following documents by January 28:

  1. A current, complete transcript of grades from each college attended. Grade reports are not accepted.
  2. A completed applicant appraisal form.
  3. A copy of the first two pages of the most recently filed IRS Form 1040 used for the Financial Information page.
  4. Proof of U.S. citizenship or residency, such as a copy of one of the following: Birth Certificate, Certificate of Naturalization, Permanent Resident Card or document of approval of DACA status.

Selection of Recipients

Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of academic record, demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities, honors, work experience, statement of goals and aspirations and unusual personal or family circumstances that demonstrate the student has overcome barriers to success, and an outside appraisal. Financial need must be demonstrated and will be used to determine the amount of each award, ranging from $5,000 to $15,000.

An external selection committee comprised of educators and community leaders will select recipients. All applicants agree to accept the decision as final.

Notification

Applicants will be notified of their status in mid-January. Semifinalists will be notified of their status at the end of March. Not all semifinalists will be selected as recipients.

Payment of Scholarships

Scholarship America processes scholarship payments in equal installments on August 15 and December 15. A check is made payable to the student’s school and mailed to each recipient’s home address.

Obligations

Recipients are required to fulfill the enrollment requirements of the award and to notify Scholarship America of any changes in address, school enrollment, or other relevant information, and to send a complete official transcript when requested.

Recipients may also be invited and strongly encouraged to attend promotional events.

Revisions

Scholarship America reserves the right to review the conditions and procedures of this scholarship program and to make changes at any time including termination of the program.
